Somewhere to go, not only somebody to visit
Most care in Barking and Dagenham is delivered by carers coming to your house, and we do that too. What we also have here, which very few providers do, is a building. Our day services centre at 1 Surrey Road in Dagenham runs a structured programme for adults and for children and young people with disabilities or complex needs.
Sessions run Monday to Friday, nine to four as standard, with flexible hours including eight in the morning to eight in the evening and weekends by arrangement. Minibus transport with door to door collection is included where available, and lunches, snacks and drinks are included in the daily fee. There are activity and skills rooms and a sensory room.
For families of disabled children the hardest hours are the ones after school and the six weeks of the summer holidays, when the structure disappears and there is nowhere to go. This is what the centre is for. For adults, it is company, activity and a shape to the week, and for the family carer at home it is hours back.
Alongside the centre we provide personal care, respite, supported living and emergency placements across the borough, for adults and for children from birth to eighteen.

Getting care arranged in Barking and Dagenham
For an adult, contact adult social care at the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham and ask for a care needs assessment. It is free, anybody can ask for one regardless of income or savings, and it is the route to funding as well as to support.
For a disabled child, ask the children with disabilities team at the same council about an assessment and about short breaks. Councils have a specific duty to provide short breaks for families of disabled children and to publish what is available locally. A great many families never claim them because nobody has said the words out loud.
If you are a family carer yourself, you are entitled to a carer assessment in your own right, separately from any assessment of the person you care for. Ask for it by name.

Yes, minibus transport with door to door collection where available. Our vehicles carry trained support workers rather than only a driver, which is the difference that matters on a difficult journey.
Are meals included?
Yes. Lunches, snacks and drinks are included in the daily fee, and any dietary or feeding plan is followed exactly.
Do you run through the school holidays?
Yes, and that is when demand is highest. Ask early, particularly for the summer, and ask the council about short breaks funding at the same time.
